Point Sparring Tournament Rules

Uniform:
Competitors must wear a complete uniform. No T-shirts
No jewelry except for round wedding band.

Sparring Equipment:
Mandatory gear: Headgear, gloves, boots, mouthpiece, and groin cup (males).
All gear must be foam dipped or vinyl covered. Toes must be covered. Other gear must be approved by the judges before the competition.
All groin protectors must be concealed beneath uniform.
Optional Gear: Forearm, shin/instep, chest protector.
No borrowing of gear within the same ring.
Finger nails and toes nails must be clipped and covered by gear.
No tape permitted on the outside surface of gloves or boots.

Sparring rules:
Note: All competitors must have gear on and be ready to compete when their name is called.

1. Acceptable Techniques:

A. Reverse punch, lunge punch, or jab.
B. Controlled back fist strike.
C. Knife hand techniques to the body or upper back.
D. Front, side, round house, hook, and crescent kicks.

2. Target Areas for Scoring:

A. Waist to shoulders in the front of the body. Head, protected by headgear (NOT FACE.)
B. Controlled techniques within 2-3” of target is a point.
C. All techniques must be controlled. The center judge or any two judges can decide if a technique is excessive.
D. Sweeping or takedowns with controlled follow up technique.

3. Non-Acceptable Techniques, Conduct, and Penalties:

A. Excessive contact to the body Warning, Disqualification
B. Contact to the face, neck, or spine Disqualification
C. Disrespectful response to the judge Disqualification
D. Failure to obey judges instructions Warning, Disqualification
E. Attack to knees or other joint Caution, Warning, Disqualification
F. Uncontrolled spinning techniques Caution, Warning, Disqualification
G. Stepping out of ring Caution, Warning, Disqualification
H. Ax or groin kicks Caution, Warning, Disqualification
I. Interference by parent, instructor, or another competitor Disqualification
J. Causing an opponent to bleed Automatic Disqualification
K. No contact to the back Caution, Warning, Disqualification

Penalty Value

Caution: No loss or gain of point.
Warning: Point goes to opponent.
Disqualification: Elimination from match.
Disqualification for conduct: Elimination from match and gym.

Injuries and Accidents: Forfeiture is the decision given when a competitor is injured and unable to continue, abandons the match or is withdrawn on the order of the chief referee.

Points:

First competitor to score 5 points wins. Time limit for each match is two minutes. If five points have not been earned, competitor with most points at the end of two minutes is the winner. If there is a tie and time is up, competitor who scores the next point wins. Grand Champion Black Belt match is between winner of the men’s black belt 18-34 sparring division and the men’s 35+ black belt sparring division. However, this is subject to change depending on enrollment in both divisions.
Penalties will be the same as point sparring. Scorekeeper will keep track of the penalties announced by the center referee. The match will only be stopped if there is excessive contact. The center referee will then disqualify the fighter causing the infraction.
